Be Storm Aware This Winter

Water running from drain
Storms can strike Tasmania at any time but are most common in winter and spring. Make sure you're prepared before, during and after a storm with these helpful tips from the SES:

BEFORE STORM SEASON

  • Check your home insurance is current and adequate.
  • List your emergency phone numbers.
  • Trim tree branches well clear of your house and powerlines.
  • Check, clean and secure your roof, guttering and downpipes.
  • Store poisons above ground level in case of flash floods.
  • Prepare an emergency kit

AS THE STORM APPROACHES

  • Listen to your battery radio for storm information updates.
  • Shelter and secure pets and animals.
  • Shelter vehicles or cover with tarpaulin/blankets.
  • Disconnect all electrical appliances during electrical storms.
  • Secure loose objects on your property.
  • Secure doors and windows.
  • Put valuables, medications, spare warm clothing and your emergency kit in a water tight plastic bag.

DURING THE STORM

  • Stay indoors.
  • Listen to your battery radio for storm information updates.
  • If you are outside, find emergency shelter (not under a tree).
  • If driving, stop clear of trees, powerlines or streams.
  • Avoid using the telephone.

AFTER THE STORM

  • Listen to local radio for warnings/advice.
  • Check your house for damage.
  • If you need assistance, consult your Emergency Contact List.
  • If you don't need help, check on your neighbours.
  • Beware of fallen powerlines, damaged trees and flooded watercourses.
  • Don't go sightseeing. Stay around your home and help others.
