International Drivers Permits

Available at any RACT Travelworld Branch

An International Driving Permit (IDP) costs $25 for RACT members and $35 for non members. You can apply at any RACT Travelworld branch - If booking your overseas holiday with RACT Travelworld - we will pay for your International Driving Permit

A valid IDP is a requirement for renting a motor vehicle in many countries and is helpful for tourists who find themselves in need of identification or assistance. Your IDP carries your identification details in nine languages (English, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Italian, German, Arabic, Swedish and French).

An IDP also provides inexpensive additional security. IDPs are officially sanctioned by the United Nations and accepted worldwide in over 150 countries as a recognisable form of identification. In some countries you may be asked to surrender your passport under certain circumstances. An IDP provides an extra photo ID that you can always carry with you.

IDPs are special permits for tourists, authorised by a United Nations Treaty for the purpose of allowing motorists to drive internationally without further tests or applications, provided their domestic driver's licence is valid. An IDP is proof that you hold a valid driver's licence in your home country at the date of issue of the IDP and should be carried with your domestic driver's licence. A valid IDP permits you to drive in most foreign countries in case of an emergency under normal IDP conditions.

IDPs are issued through state and territory motoring clubs. All you need to do is take a copy of your current driver's licence into your local club with a passport-size photo and fill out an application form.

WARNING: Counterfeit International Driving Permits (IDPs) are being offered for sale on the internet. These forgeries are not recognised by authorities and can land holders in a great deal of trouble with traffic authorities overseas. The only authorised IDP issuing bodies in Australia are state and territory motoring organizations, including the RACT, that are members of the Australian Automobile Association (AAA). The United Nations, under whose auspices IDPs are issued, has acknowledged the problem and is preparing a list of organisations (touring and automobile clubs for the most part) authorised to issue IDPs. The RACT warns you not to waste your money on worthless documents.
