Top tips for your first job interview
1. Be confident
A job interview is about you - a topic that you know best! Stay calm, cool and collected. Just like a speech, you're talking about yourself and your interests.
2. Do your research
Learn as much as you can about the job you're applying for and the workplace. When it comes to writing a speech, I'm always reading articles, learning the facts, exploring relevant websites and doing research.
3. Practice, practice, practice
Once I've written a speech, I read and say it over and over again. I even practice it in front of a mirror and imagine an audience in front of me. Why not try writing some practice interview questions and answer them in front of a mirror or with a friend? You know what they say - practice makes perfect!
4. Think on your feet
You can definitely try to predict some of the interview questions. But there will always be one or two where you'll have to think on your feet. When I'm given an impromptu speech topic, I take a deep breath, try to remain level-headed and logically work my way through a response.
5. Think positive
If you think positively as you go into your job interview, you're on the way to putting your best foot forward. And potentially getting the job! Even if you're unsuccessful, think of the wonderful experience. When I don't place in public speaking contests, I take what I've learnt and try to apply it to future circumstances so I can do better next time.
