Planning to drive overseas? You might need an IDP to rent a car, motorbike, minibus or go-kart.

So, what's an IDP? It's a translation of your domestic driver's licence into nine languages, and it's only valid when presented with your current domestic driver's licence.

Apply online or in-branch

Apply online - we'll deliver your IDP within 3 business days for metro areas. Please allow longer for public holidays, regional or international deliveries. Or you can choose to collect from an RACT store, see below - after 2 business days. You’ll receive an email notification when it’s ready to collect. For security purposes, applicants must collect their own IDP and present valid ID.

Travelling soon? Our branches can issue IDPs on the spot. You’ll need to bring your passport photo and drivers licence with you. Please note only our Burnie, Devonport, Glenorchy, Hobart RACT House, Eastlands, Kingston & Launceston branches are equipped to issue this service.

The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) is the only authorised distributor of IDPs for Australian driver's licence holders. RACT will process your IDP on behalf of the AAA as their sales agent.

Here's what you'll need to apply.

  • A passport style photo with a plain white background. If you're applying online, you can use a free passport photo app on your phone.

  • A clear and readable scan of the front and back of your licence. We can’t accept temporary licences. You’ll need to wait until you get your actual licence before you can apply.

  • You can pay by Visa or Mastercard.
