Jenny Burgess

Associate Secretary, Department for Education, Children and Young People

Jenny Burgess graduated from the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Education. She has also completed post-graduate studies in educational leadership and administration, and a Master of Education with a focus on literacy and numeracy teaching and assessment. 

With 35 years' experience in public education, Jenny has held various roles within the Tasmanian Department of Education spanning senior secondary curriculum and accreditation, education data and performance, curriculum development, and portfolios in inclusion and diversity. 

Prior to becoming the Associate Secretary in November 2023, Jenny served as the Deputy Secretary, Strategy and Performance, where she provided strategic policy advice to the Department Secretary and the Minister for Education on a broad range of matters. Since the creation of the Department for Education, Children and Young People in 2022, Jenny has worked alongside the Secretary as Associate Secretary to drive improvement and reform across the agency. Her current strategic responsibilities include agency strategy development including the Strategic Plan, early years policy development, and improving educational outcomes for Tasmanian Government school students. 

Jenny has represented the Tasmanian Government on the University of Tasmania Council (2019-2020) and the Australian Children's Television Foundation (2014-2022) and is currently a member of the Women Supporting Women in the Public Service Steering Committee.
