Planning to drive overseas? You might need an IDP to rent a car, motorbike, minibus or go-kart.

So, what's an IDP? It's a translation of your domestic driver's licence into nine languages, and it's only valid when presented with your current domestic driver's licence.

Apply online or in-store

Apply online - we'll deliver your IDP within 3 business days for metro areas. Please allow longer for public holidays, regional or international deliveries. Or you can choose to collect from an RACT store, see below - after 2 business days. You’ll receive an email notification when it’s ready to collect. Customers can now nominate a third party to pick up their IDP. Please refer to the instructions within the online application process.

Travelling soon? Our stores can issue IDPs on the spot. You’ll need to bring your passport photo and drivers licence with you. All seven stores across Burnie, Devonport, Launceston, Glenorchy, Hobart RACT House, Eastlands, and Kingston are equipped to issue this service.

The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) is the only authorised distributor of IDPs for Australian driver's licence holders. RACT will process your IDP on behalf of the AAA as their sales agent.

Here's what you'll need to apply.

  • A passport style photo with a plain white background. If you're applying online, you can use a free passport photo app on your phone.

  • A clear and readable scan of the front and back of your licence. We can’t accept temporary licences. You’ll need to wait until you get your actual licence before you can apply.

  • You can pay by Visa or Mastercard.

Common questions

  • Do all countries require an IDP?

    No, some countries such as New Zealand do not require licenced Australian drivers to have an IDP if they intend to use a motor vehicle.

    Even if you may not require an IDP for your chosen destination, having one does provide you with an extra piece of identification. This can be useful if you are ever asked to surrender (or lose) your passport.

  • I've seen other providers offer IDPs, are these legal?

    No. Counterfeit IDPs are being offered for sale on the internet, usually at inflated prices.

    These forged IDPs are illegal and can get the holder into a great deal of difficulty with the traffic authorities in various countries.

    The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) is the only authorised distributor of IDPs for Australian drivers licence holders. RACT will process your IDP on behalf of the AAA as their sales agent.

  • Am I covered for roadside assistance while abroad?

    If you're an RACT member with a current roadside policy, when abroad you'll gain access to our vast network of reciprocal motoring clubs when driving overseas; plus, global benefits and discounts.

    RACT is a member of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). FIA clubs provide a broad range of services to each other's members, when travelling abroad for up to three months.

    Many countries throughout the world provide reciprocal services, but not all. View the International Driving Permit Directory to see which countries you’ll get roadside assistance and other reciprocal services in, plus information on how to contact these clubs.

    To use FIA services while overseas, carry your RACT membership card and a confirmation certificate. You can visit a branch or phone 13 27 22 for this.

    Please note that hire car companies may have their own roadside assistance arrangements for their vehicles, which should be checked at the time of booking.
