RACT backs real-world testing of car fuel and emissions

Is your car's advertised fuel use too good to be true? For 76% of vehicles tested, the answer is yes.

The Australian Automobile Association's Real-World Testing Program tests a range of cars in real situations – not labs – to deliver results that are more relevant to Australian conditions. 

Roz Madsen, RACT's Senior Policy Specialist, recently travelled to Geelong to observe the program in action. 

"When it comes to buying a car, members deserve information they can trust - not just the figures printed in a brochure," she said.

“That’s why RACT supports this program, which puts popular vehicles through their paces on Australian roads, giving motorists a clearer picture of what to expect before they buy. 

"Seeing the testing process firsthand provided valuable insight into how fuel consumption, emissions and vehicle performance are measured in real-world conditions, helping inform RACT's policy work and advocacy on behalf of members."  

Testing takes place over a 93 km route in and around Geelong, Victoria, and compares real-world results with mandatory laboratory figures.  

Since 2023, more than 180 petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles have been tested. So far, 76% of vehicles tested have used more fuel than manufacturers advertised - with one hybrid using 27% more fuel in real-world conditions. 

“For RACT members, this matters," said Ms Madsen. "Fuel is a major household cost, and accurate, independent information can help Tasmanians compare vehicles with confidence. 

“As Tasmania’s member organisation, RACT advocates for safer, fairer and more affordable mobility. Supporting independent testing is one way we help members cut through the claims and make choices that suit their needs, budget and lifestyle.” 

The Real-World Testing Program is funded by the Australian Government.
