Traveling this Easter? Plan ahead and rest

Published | 2 April 2026

As the Easter long weekend approaches and with school holidays incoming, RACT is asking all Tasmanian drivers to take extra care and to prioritise safety when travelling on the state’s roads.

The state’s peak motoring organisation is joining Tasmania Police in reminding everyone that simple, safe driving habits, planning your trip, taking breaks and driving to the conditions can make the difference between a safe journey and a tragedy.

RACT Head of Advocacy Mel Percival said the need for caution was underlined by recent road statistics.

“Tasmania has already recorded six fatal crashes this year, resulting in nine lives lost, compared with eight fatalities at the same time last year,” Ms Percival said.

“There have also been 76 serious injuries, down from 93 in the same period last year.

“These figures show why Tasmania Police’s Operation Safe Arrival which runs from 2 – 7 April is so important, targeting unsafe driving practices and helping everyone get to their destinations safely.”

Ms Percival encouraged drivers to plan their trips carefully, allow plenty of time and prioritise safety over speed.

“Take the time to plan your trip, check your vehicle before you leave, drive to the conditions, stay vigilant and avoid distractions while driving and make regular rest stops to avoid fatigue.

“Practicing patience, courtesy and adhering to speed limits significantly enhances your safety, those of your passengers and that of others on the road,” she said.

Ms Percival also highlighted the practical benefits of safe driving.

“Safe drive techniques are also ones that improve your fuel efficiency, helping your fuel dollar go further.”

Small adjustments to your driving style, like smoother acceleration, consistent speeds, and checking tire pressure can reduce fuel consumption and maximize the distance travelled on each tank.

RACT encourages all drivers to:

  • Check tyre pressure, oil, coolant, lights, and battery before you travel.

  • Plan rest stops every 2 hours to stretch, grab a coffee and top up your fuel.

  • Drive to the conditions — slow-down in poor weather and on winding roads.

  • Drive smoothly anticipating the traffic flow - keep a safe distance from other vehicles and be patient with traffic.

  • Maintain a steady speed.
