Not all cracker fun
Fireworks may be fun for humans, but they can cause serious stress, fear, and even injury for pets who don’t understand what’s happening.
Cracker Night is coming
Cracker Night is scheduled for Saturday 24 May in Tasmania, and with it comes a sharp increase in fireworks activity across the region. While many enjoy the show, it’s important to prepare your pets for the potential stress this night can cause.
Why fireworks are a problem for pets
The sudden, unpredictable nature of fireworks can trigger fear responses in animals. The noise and lights can cause panic, leading pets to bolt from their homes or enclosures in an attempt to escape the perceived danger.
Every year, stories emerge of pets breaking through windows, digging under fences, or slipping their collars in a panic. Sadly, many become lost, injured, or worse.
Keeping your pets safe
There are several steps pet owners can take to reduce the risk of harm:
Keep pets indoors before, during, and after any fireworks displays. Close all windows, blinds, and curtains to muffle the sound and block out flashes of light
Create a calm, secure space with familiar bedding, toys, and treats to help pets feel safe
Play pet-safe music or turn on a TV to help mask the sound of fireworks
Use calming aids such as anxiety wraps, pheromone diffusers, or natural supplements many of which are available from your vet or pet store
For pets with severe anxiety, speak to your vet about safe medications or behavioural strategies that can help manage stress
Looking after your pets all year round
Fireworks may only be used a few times a year, but their impact on pets can be long-lasting. It’s important to have a plan in place for these events and to consider pet insurance to help cover any unexpected injuries or vet visits that may arise from fireworks-related incidents.
You can feel more at ease knowing your pet is protected. While we can’t prevent every firework, we can help you be prepared.
