Paws at risk: help protect your dog from parvovirus

With a recent parvovirus outbreak in Tasmania, it’s top of mind for many pet owners. Here are some helpful tips to help protect your pup.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease that primarily affects unvaccinated puppies and dogs. Understanding its symptoms, transmission, and how to prevent it is essential for every dog owner.

What is CPV?

CPV attacks the gastrointestinal system, causing severe vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, and loss of appetite. The virus has an incubation period of four to six days, and symptoms can escalate quickly. Without prompt veterinary care, it can be fatal.

How to protect your dog
  • Vaccinate: Ensure your puppy or dog is up to date with all core vaccinations.

  • Avoid public areas: Until fully vaccinated, keep your dog away from high-risk areas like dog parks, beaches, or walking trails where other dogs frequent.

  • Clean up responsibly: Always pick up after your dog and disinfect surfaces they come into contact with.

  • Stay alert: If your dog shows any symptoms, contact your vet immediately. Early treatment greatly improves the chances of recovery.

Understanding transmission

Parvovirus is extremely resilient and can survive for months in the environment. It spreads through direct contact with infected dogs or indirect contact with contaminated surfaces, faeces, or even human hands, shoes, and clothing.

Treatment

Early intervention is vital. Treatment typically includes hospitalisation, intravenous fluids, medications, and supportive care. Despite best efforts, the virus can still be fatal, particularly for young or unvaccinated dogs.

Parvovirus is preventable. Keeping your dog vaccinated and minimising exposure to infection sources, are some of the best ways to avoid it. Stay informed and speak with your vet regularly to help keep your furry friend safe and healthy.
