New Spirit of Tasmania ships about to set sail

With new accommodation options and an RACT member discount, it's a great time to get on board.

Book one of the new cabins and use your RACT member discount to cross Bass Strait with more choice, fresh designs and better availability.

The new ships are approximately 40% larger than the previous ones, with added options for those with pets, larger families, business travel or accessibility requirements. They can also carry more large vehicles such as caravans and motorhomes, are more environmentally friendly and have new options for Tasmanian meals and drinks on board.

Whether you’re after a family cabin, a bit of luxury, or to keep your pet close, let’s explore the overnight options for October 31 and beyond.

Cabins

All cabins include an ensuite, adjustable air-conditioning and thoughtful amenities;

  • Twin bed porthole cabin (sleeps 2): A private room for two with an ensuite and ocean views through a classic porthole window. Ideal for couples or friends.

  • Deluxe porthole cabin (sleeps 2): For a little extra comfort, the deluxe cabin has a queen bed, ensuite, TV, mini-fridge, bathrobes, an amenity kit and a Tasmanian-made wool throw from Waverley Mills. The most indulgent option.

  • Four bed cabin (sleeps 4): The most popular choice and great value for families and groups. With quality bedding, practical storage and a spacious ensuite, with the option of an inside or porthole cabin.

  • Six bed porthole cabin (sleeps 6): The roomiest option, with three large porthole windows, plenty of storage and charging ports for the whole family. Perfect for bigger families or groups.

  • Cots: Infants are best accommodated in deluxe, twin bed and four bed cabins. Add an infant to your booking and a cot will be placed in the cabin free of charge (subject to availability). Look for the "Cot Provided" icon when booking (and bring your own linen.)

  • Pet cabin: see Travelling with pets section, below.

Recliners

Recliners are your cheapest options for crossing the Strait, and now there are two options:

Standard recliner: Settle into a comfy recliner for a laid-back journey. You'll have charging ports at your seat, room for your carry-on luggage and easy access to the outdoor deck. Wheelchair-accessible recliners are also available.

Business recliner: Stretch out in a lie-flat leather recliner and enjoy the Business recliners in a quiet, spacious retreat with in-seat charging, extra carry-on luggage allowance and room to relax or catch up on work. Wheelchair-accessible recliners are available here too.

Travelling with pets

Pet kennels: onboard kennels are climate-controlled, supervised by trained staff, and monitored by CCTV with regular welfare checks. You can bring your pet's bedding, food and comfort items, but note you cannot visit them until you are disembarking.

Pet-friendly cabin (sleeps 4 + 2 pets): Bring up to two furry companions along. These secure, climate-controlled cabins have an ensuite and easy-clean flooring and come in porthole or inside options.

Accessibility

Spirit of Tasmania offers assistance for passengers with reduced mobility, a medical condition (including discharge from hospital within 72 hours before travel), medical oxygen needs, hearing or vision impairment, or a Guide/Hearing Dog or Assistance Animal. More details can be found here.

If you're booking more than 72 hours before travel, you can book online and complete the specific needs or accessibility requirement form. You can also book through a travel agent or contact Spirit of Tasmania directly.

Food options

The new ships have more options when it comes to food and drinks too. The popular self-serve buffet has been reimagined as a market-style experience where you can choose from five different stalls covering seafood, world flavours, classics, slow-cooked meats and desserts. There are also various bars, a café and the general store for snacks and more.
