Ian Gillespie
Ian Gillespie AM is a seasoned board director and former CEO with over 40 years of experience across public, private, and mutual sectors. Appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2020, Ian has built a distinguished career combining strategic acumen with authentic leadership in complex, highly regulated industries.
Ian's notable achievements include serving as Group CEO of RACQ Limited from 2006 to 2019, where he transformed the organisation from 1.1 million members with $140 million revenue to 1.8 million members with revenues exceeding $1.2 billion. Under his leadership, RACQ reintegrated its insurance subsidiary, established RACQ Bank and the RACQ Foundation, and grew annual member value to over $150 million.
Born in Manly, Sydney, Ian holds a BA in Industrial Relations/Economics from UNSW and a Diploma of Laws. He was admitted as a Barrister of the Supreme Court of NSW in 1982. His diverse career spans roles like Legal Counsel at Wormald International Ltd to senior executive positions across insurance, manufacturing, distribution, agriculture, transport, defence technology, and private equity.
Ian has held numerous board positions nationally and internationally, including Chairman of Global Mobility Alliance, Director of the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals, and Director of the Australian Automobile Association. He currently focuses on mentoring CEOs and serving as a non-executive director for community-focused, purpose-led organisations in motorsport, road safety and risk management.
