Should you leave the air-con on for your pets?
Yes, is the simple answer. Unlike us, our pets can’t open a window or switch on a fan. It's important to remember that we control our pets whole environment. When temperatures climb, we're responsible for our pets and it's vital to consider their comfort.
How can you tell if your pet is too hot?
Pets handle heat differently, and some struggle more than others.
Flat-faced (brachycephalic) dog breeds like pugs, bulldogs and boxers are more prone to overheating because they can’t pant as effectively. Dogs with thick coats, older pets, and those with existing health conditions are also at higher risk.
Common signs your dog may be too hot include:
- heavy panting
- seeking out cooler areas of the house
- lethargy or low energy
- restlessness or obvious discomfort
Cats are often better at finding cool spots on their own, but panting in a cat is always a warning sign and should be taken seriously.
When should you leave the air-con on?
Once the temperature creeps above the mid-20s, it’s worth paying closer attention to how warm your home feels for your pets. Over 30 degrees, having a cooler option available becomes especially important.
If you can leave your dog or cat inside with the air conditioning running, that can be one of the simplest ways to keep them comfortable, particularly in homes that trap heat.
Not every Tasmanian home warms up the same way. Some stay naturally cool, while others can heat up quickly, even on days that don’t feel extreme outside.
A good rule of thumb: if you’d be uncomfortable inside without cooling, your pet probably would be too. If you’re unsure, it’s safer to leave the air-con on.
Other ways to help keep pets cool indoors
The most important thing is choice. Pets need the ability to move out of the heat, whether they’re indoors or in the backyard.
Avoid leaving animals confined in hot spaces like crates in direct sun, uncovered yards, garages, sheds or dog houses with metal roofs, as these can heat up quickly.
If you’re heading out on a hot day, it’s ideal to have someone check in on your pet. If that’s not possible and you’re worried about the heat, consider alternatives like taking your dog with you, or leaving them with a friend or family member. Tasmanian summers might be milder than the rest of Australia, but hot days still pack a punch, especially indoors. Paying attention to your pet’s needs, and making small adjustments at home, can go a long way in keeping them safe, comfortable and happy while you’re out.***
Your pets rely on you to look out for them and a little planning can make all the difference.
