5 ways to keep your pets moving indoors this winter
When it’s too chilly to head outside, these five fun indoor activities will help keep your pet active, entertained, and happily by your side.
When the temperature drops and heading outdoors isn’t so appealing, it's easy to forget that our furry companions still need to move, play, and burn off energy, just like we do. But don’t worry, keeping your pet active indoors can be easy, fun, and a great way to bond too!
Here are five playful ways to keep your pet’s tail wagging (or whiskers twitching) without stepping outside into the cold.
1. Keep their minds busing with enrichment toys
Who says exercise is all about running and jumping? Mental workouts are just as important! Puzzle feeders, snuffle mats, and scent games are brilliant ways to keep your pet engaged. These clever toys challenge your pet to think, sniff, and solve their way to a treat. The good thing is they'll barely notice that they're exercising.
2. Tug-of-war: a classic game that never gets old
Grab a sturdy rope or soft toy and get ready for a round of tug-of-war! It’s a fantastic way to get your pet moving, build muscle, and have a laugh in the process. Just be sure to use a toy that’s gentle on teeth and gums, and avoid any rough yanking, especially up or down which could cause neck injuries.
3. Turn stairs into a pet gym
Got stairs at home? Great! Try tossing a toy to the top and have your pet retrieve it, or simply walk the stairs together. It’s a great way to sneak in some cardio. Just remember to supervise closely and avoid this activity if your pet has joint or mobility issues. As always, safety first!
4. Indoor fetch (yes, it’s a thing!)
If you’ve got the space in a hallway, a lounge room or even a wide open kitchen indoor fetch can be a winner. Use a soft, lightweight toy and make sure the floor’s not too slippery. You’ll be amazed how much energy your pet can burn while chasing a toy back and forth in a small space.
5. DIY ability course
Feeling a bit creative? Build your own pet playground using things around the house, think pillows, blankets, boxes, or brooms balanced between chairs. Whether you’ve got a curious cat or a bouncy dog, navigating your homemade obstacle course will help with balance, coordination and problem-solving. It’s like a little indoor adventure, right in your lounge room!
Tasmanian winters are usually kind enough to still enjoy the outdoors now and then, but on those truly chilly or rainy days, these indoor ideas can help your pet stay fit and happy. Just remember to always keep an eye on them during playtime and most importantly have fun together.
