Stronger together
Between 27 August and 6 September 2024, Tasmania was hit by a significant storm. Homes were damaged, power was lost, and we stood shoulder to shoulder with our members through it all.
This storm was the most significant widespread weather event since the southern floods of May 2018. Our claims call centre received three months worth of average claim lodgements in just 10 days. From the moment the storm hit, we hit the ground running. Our large event plan activated immediately as calls flooded in, 500 in just three hours on the first Monday alone. Over September, our team responded to more than 6,200 calls, which is 1,500 calls above average call numbers.
But this storm event wasn't just about answering calls, it was about acting fast to respond to all affected members. Within the first week, every emergency visit was arranged or completed, and by the second week, 95% of the highest priority site visits were done. Some of our claims team from the south relocated north to provide face-to-face claims support, showing just how deeply we’re connected to our community.
We trialled new ways to reach members and worked closely with builders and loss adjusters. We sped up repairs and settlements as much as possible, helping families get back to normal sooner.
As of July 2025, 97% of storm-related claims have been fully settled, with over $10 million paid across all claims. It’s a reflection of the teamwork, dedication and local commitment that guided our response.
While we’re proud of our response, we’re always learning. We’re continuously improving our large scale claims process, enhancing communication, and making the entire experience smoother for our members.
Tasmania’s weather can be unpredictable. That’s why we encourage you to review your insurance cover, prepare your home, and have a plan in place.
When the next storm hits, we’ll be here — your local shoulder to lean on, stronger together.
